The Sign-on Project

Objectives: The Sign-on project focuses on teaching staff members how to assist patients and families with the legal paperwork needed to sign on to hospice care. This project is technical at its core but also demonstrates soft skills in communication and relationship building at a time when patients and families are most vulnerable.

My Role: I was tasked with collaborating with several staff members to gather information for processes, language, and approaches for the sign-on at the company. After extensive analysis, it became apparent that over time, there had been a significant change in what was originally stated as the standard and what historical training had provided. My role included the design and development of the product as well as implementation and evaluation.

Project Design and Development: After several months of collaboration, I was able to script a training video using the information that I had gathered with the help of different staff members. Once the script was approved, I then shifted my attention to creating a video using electronic forms, short video clips, and still images videos and images to emphasize key points, create fluidity and visual interest, and engage “sticky” learning. The compilation of many assets created a singular video. I then concentrated on creating an audio voiceover for the video using the script that was created. With the addition of the audio voiceover, I was able to edit the final product of the video extensively using final touches of video effects to add a final layer of emphasis and visual interest. The video was then exported and uploaded into Articulate Storyline 360 as the main focus of the course.

The course was designed to focus mainly on the training video; however, this platform was intentionally chosen so that multiple videos and PDF resources could be provided with just a click by the user to supplement and aid learning. To create detailed and specific learning of an extenuating topic such as Medicare or the specifics of an attending physician, short videos were created to boost learning. Each supplement video served the role of adding enrichment for challenging topics. In addition, PDF job aids were created to assist visual learners and provide “just in time” training help for future reference.

In addition to 6 supplemental training videos and 4 job aids, two eBooks were created. One eBook was created to focus on the electronic forms with visuals, inviting graphics, and the script from the video to assist learning. The second eBook was created to focus on the paper forms using those visuals, inviting graphics, and the script from the video to assist learning.

The course featured the training video as the “main event”. Learners were directed to the supplemental resources that were listed in the top right corner of the screen. Learners could stop the video at any time and watch or read a resource. In addition, the eBooks were able to be downloaded so that learners could follow along with the video if they wanted to.

Implementation: The course was distributed through Relias, the company’s learning management system as assigned training.

Evaluation: A post-test was given as a completion of the course. Feedback from learners and post-test scores demonstrate the success of this project.
